We now have a tally of the money dedicated to construction activity in the province in April and we were a bit of an anomaly nationally.
StatsCan’s recounting of construction investment in the month shows Saskatchewan enjoyed a big bump when compared to March: up 13.3 per cent. That translates into growth of $33 million.
Not only was that the biggest percentage improvement among the provinces, we were one of only two that actually posted an increase. Eight saw declines from March to April.
In this province we saw budgets committed to new single-family homes increase by $30 million or 18 per cent. In fact, we were the only province to increase the amount spent on single-family residential construction anywhere in Canada as investment spears to be increasingly devoted to multi-family construction through most of the nation.
Moving over the non-residential side, investment surpassed $150 million for the month. That represents a 3.5 per cent increase over March, which was second-largest growth number among the provinces behind only PEI. Across the country, government and industrial buildings are seeing added strength while commercial buildings such offices or retail are slowing.
