Last week Statistics Canada released what is considered the official tabulation of economic performance or GDP which measures economic output. Saskatchewan came out with the silver medal when all the results were in.
We tied Alberta with growth of 2.3-percent which was a tenth of a point lower than BC at 2.4. In other words, the three western-most provinces were Canada’s economic leaders last year.
The national average was only 1.5 percent.
Among the big drivers pushing our economic expansion was business investment. Newfoundland and Saskatchewan topped the list on this one was resource extraction was a catalyst for capital inflows.
In Saskatchewan, mining development – projects such Jansen potash, the Foran mine and northern uranium exploration – was an important contributor along with the oil and gas sector.
Saskatchewan was also second to Newfoundland when measuring investment in machinery and equipment.
