Saskatchewan’s hot wheels

With more miles of road than any other province, Saskatchewan understandably also has a strong relationship with motor vehicles. But a new report suggests our love is not shared equally by all forms of transportation.

The number of units that were registered in Saskatchewan last year totalled 1.1 million. That’s pretty much one vehicle for every member of the population. But not all are licensed for travelling on roads – that number was 915,000. Both those figures rose from 2017 to 2018.

But motorcycles appear to be losing their lustre. The number of motorbikes licensed in the province fell last year – down by about 700 to just over 8,000. And this is a trend that’s been going on for a while. In 2014, there were nearly 11,000 motorcycles and mopeds with licenses. So, we’re down about 25 per cent from the peak.

The number of buses, off-road, construction and farm vehicles also declined last year, but the total count of virtually all other kinds of cars and trucks – even bigger ones – were still rising last year as were the number of trailers.
