Even with our population growing at its fastest rate in more than a century, Saskatchewan employers are still falling farther behind in their search for workers.
The latest report on job vacancies – that’s spots going unfilled as recruiters search for candidates – suggests Saskatchewan could use another 23,000 workers just to fill the already-created positions. That works out to about 4.5 per cent of the workforce, putting us in the top three provinces in the country in terms of unfilled employment opportunities.
To put it another way, this is one of the best places in the country to find work.
It is abundant. And, according to the monthly update on pay packages, employers are responding to the challenge by offering richer wage levels.
The average weekly pay in Saskatchewan is $1,175. That’s up $25 a week from just a month ago. Now, this number also includes overtime, so, it could be that workers are seeing higher checks because they are logging more hours to offset all the positions going unfilled. But this average is four per cent higher than a year ago – one of the highest growth rates in the nation.
