The conversation regarding a merger between Canada and the US led by Donald Trump seems to have moved from a comic tone to something much more serious.
This is not the first time someone has talked about a single North American nation but it is the first time someone with real power has become engaged in the discussion.
Over the years, Saskatchewan had a successionist party under Dick Colver for a short time. And then there was Cascadia with its vision of a large swath of the western half of the continent pulling out of both the US and Canada to form a new country.
And, of course, thoughts of finding an alternative to Canada have always been active in Quebec. The common thread here is that chunks of Canadian society have long looked for an alternative. Now the US President-to-be is joining in to that conversation.
As the federal Liberals find us a new prime minister, they would do well to forget painting a positive legacy for Justin Trudeau and begin questioning how they got us to this place.
