Fresh off a report showing Saskatchewan manufacturers were outpacing the rest of the country in sales growth, their cousins in the wholesale sector were doing as well or even better.
Year-end figures from Statistics Canada on the performance of wholesalers last year show Saskatchewan was almost in a league of its own.
This segment of the economy includes some parts of the manufacturing realm but also features fertilizer production, such as potash, which is not produced in a factory but it has a huge impact on the results for this segment of the economy. The war in Eastern Europe played a role in our performance as not only did volumes go up for potash, so did prices.
The result is that 2022 saw wholesalers increase their revenue streams by 24 per cent. The national average was five points so we were significantly ahead of the pack as some provinces actually posted declines.
But in Saskatchewan, we saw wholesale revenue volumes exceed $4 billion for a single month in December, which is roughly twice what you’d expect if we were measuring this on a per capita basis.
