COVID-19 and the Saskatchewan H1N1 Experience

When he was Deputy Minister of Health in Saskatchewan, Dan Florizone introduced Lean management principles into the system.

It began with five pilot projects including one to streamline the operations of the vaccine handling centre for the province.

The results were remarkable – so remarkable that the system of moving pharmaceuticals from factory to clinic was revolutionized.

Then…when H1N1 hit, Saskatchewan’s new handling system enabled the health department to immunize the province’s population in record time, taking weeks where other provinces measured their progress in years.

Now, as we turn our attention to finding a COVID-19 vaccine, the skills developed through the Lean process will give Saskatchewan residents a leg up when it is time to get vaccinated.
