Getting the job done gets employees ahead in their careers

No excuses. Accountability. Ownership. These are the terms that you’ll hear from ambitious people who seem to have a knack for getting ahead, for winning in their jobs.

For those looking to advance their careers this is worth a listen. A recent piece on the website Strategy + Business used this standard to assess the performance of those who seem to get their job done and catch the eye of those handing out the promotions.

Ryan Walter, former Stanley Cup winner and now business executive coach, offered similar advice when speaking to Saskatchewan business leaders a few weeks ago. Excuses such as blaming the ref for a missed call are the stuff of losers. When he played for a winning team, the standard was no excuses. Just win.

Those who figure out how to succeed despite obstacles are problem solvers and, in the world of commerce, that is what managers seek. They look for people who can address the organization’s challenges and defeat them.

Career advancement may be less about following your passion and more about just doing it.
