When the economists at Deloitte released their latest outlook for the country’s economy, they had Saskatchewan at or near the top for the next 36 months.
Actually, if you look at their outlook projections for the three years from 2024 to 2026, Saskatchewan was their star performer.
They expect our economy will expand by 1.4 per cent this year. That puts us at the top of the heap, tied with Alberta. Next year, we will see the pace of expansion increase to 3.1 per cent. That is second, just a tick below Alberta as our two provinces continue to set the pace nationally. And then, in 2026, Saskatchewan is alone at the top of the list at 3.6 per cent.
Now, anything over three per cent is considered to be something of a head turner as, historically, economists have used three per cent as the global benchmark for what you’d expect an economy to grow. Saskatchewan, according to this report, will exceed that global milepost for two of the next three fiscal cycles.
They point to strong capital investment inflows coupled with low debt levels and strong employment markets as the factors setting us apart from other regions.
