Help!

It was not an issue on the campaign trail but our new federal government will find itself dealing with an acute shortage of workers as soon as it gets back to work.

StatsCan has just released its mid-year report on job vacancies and it is an all-time high. The new record was not set in any specific area…it covers the waterfront of job types from entry level to highly skilled.

They also looked at job vacancies two years ago compared to the end of June this year and found that vacancies for Licensed Practical Nurses grew by more than 140% over that period. The number of unfilled jobs for registered and psychiatric nurses rose by more than 10,000 or over 85% over that same period.

And the agency found there were the same number of people working in the fields over the period under examination so it was not departures as much as fewer people entering these roles.

Construction and the hospitality sectors as well as retail also figured prominently in the 10 fields that dominated the report.
