IRD Extends European Footprint

Saskatchewan’s expanding technology community is extending its reach in Europe.

IRD or International Road Dynamics is one of the oldest and most established technology firms in the province. The roots of the Saskatoon-based firm are found in the University of Saskatchewan where a professor from the engineering school commercialized technological knowledge emerging on campus.

The firm pioneered electronic monitoring and data management in the highway transportation sector and became a global leader in the field as governments around the world relied on their expertise to build smarter highway systems in order improve traffic flow and the movement of commercial goods on roads.

It is now developing an acquisition specialty and its most recent addition was a German-based technology firm called VDS which develops and manufactures mobile traffic devices to catch speeders and red light infractions. The technology is the only product currently certified for direct enforcement.

It will be integrated into another German firm IRD purchased a few months ago extending IRD’s reach into major cities in Western Europe’s largest economy.
