Saskatchewan could be the island — again.
As a landlocked province, Saskatchewan often gets to complain about access to markets and having to rely on other jurisdictions to allow things like pipelines. But, occasionally, being that island in the middle of things is a good idea.
One case in point was in 2009 when North America and the world were caught in the grips of the Great Recession triggered by the US banking crisis. Saskatchewan was travelling on another path, enjoying a sustained growth spurt while others were contracting.
And we may be headed there once more.
In recent days, economists everywhere have begun to join the chorus that the global and North American economies are facing a recession in the new year.
But there is evidence we will once again travel a different direction. The latest is from the Conference Board of Canada which cites Saskatoon as the hottest metropolitan market in the country with growth approaching a heady seven per cent this year and a further four points next, which is the quintessential opposite of a recession.
