Job figures show Saskatchewan’s population likely to set new record

It won’t be long before we get another population update but we’ll get a bit of a feel for how that is trending when the monthly job figures come out.

Population growth or decline is one of the things they capture in the report. The latest one came out Friday.

Us posting an increase of 1,700 for the month of February brought the total for the previous twelve months to nearly 27,000. Now, this report offers only a partial insight into overall population change as it looks only at the working age cohort which is people aged 15 to 64.

The rate in Friday’s report suggests we are still on a blistering pace which will undoubtedly bring another population record when StatsCan finishes that calculation.

The economy also produced 2,300 jobs in February with about 20 per cent of them falling into the full-time category. That is an unusually low percentage for full-timers but it brings the 12 month total to more than 18,000, which is almost as many as jobs as there are in Yorkton and Estevan combined.
