Job report shows Saskatoon leading Saskatchewan’s distinct direction

The monthly job report from Statistics Canada flagged Saskatoon’s performance a couple times as it showed Saskatchewan marching in a different direction than much of Canada.

Saskatoon was leading the way as the province recorded roughly 4,000 more people working last month compared to December.

Not only is that a healthy number, it is in stark contrast to the national picture as Canada lost 200,000 jobs in January.

Saskatoon was first flagged in the report for having 12,000 more jobs last month than in January a year ago. Regina was static in that time frame.

Saskatoon also had the fewest number of people working exclusively from home at roughly 10 per cent of the workforce. It turns out this is becoming more of a permanent thing with a hybrid model – working from home most of the time but in the office on a regular basis – seen quite frequently.

But it is the big cities that had higher concentrations of people who have moved their workspace home on a relatively permanent basis. In Ottawa, it was 40 per cent and Toronto was not far behind while the national
