Saskatchewan is the best place in Canada to find a job.
StatsCan has just released its third quarter assessment of job vacancies in the country and Saskatchewan stands out from others on the list with the highest vacancy rate. In other words, employers have created more jobs than they have been able to find people to fill them.
This is quite a contrast to the remainder of the nation, especially highly-populated markets, where job vacancies are evaporating as higher interest rates and rising prices put the squeeze on small businesses. Compared to the end of September last year, for example, 100,000 job vacancies have disappeared in the country.
The bulk of those are front-line or entry level jobs requiring a high school diploma or less. This includes things like retail stores and restaurants. But we’re also seeing tightening up in higher skilled positions in manufacturing and even health care.
The rate in Saskatchewan remains at roughly five per cent, the level it’s been at for more than a year and one region with a growing vacancy rate is the Moose Jaw-Swift Current corridor which is now over six per cent.
