Long winter saw more of us vacationing somewhere warm

The long, cold winter was enough to make a record number of us shell out for a warm weather holiday this year.

That’s what the latest travel figures seem to be suggesting. Not only is it a sign that many of us were frustrated and simply needed a break from the winter that is still doing its very best to hang around, but it is also an indicator that a lot of us had some disposable cash laying around for a last-minute holiday.

The figures from March show that the number of Canadians returning to the country through a major airport were almost double the level we saw a year ago. This year we hit 2 million compared to last year’s 1.1 million.

And, when you take out the traffic through Toronto, the volume of people returning to the country through other airports actually exceeded the levels we saw prior to the pandemic.

Even the number of people who returned home after driving to the US was up in March compared to last year.
