Saskatchewan remains one of the best places in Canada to find a job.
April’s report on job vacancies – these are positions that have been created but are yet to be filled – shows Saskatchewan with the second-highest rate in the country. In other words, the second-highest percentage of spots available to someone looking for new employment.
We ended the month with nearly 19,000 vacant positions. That translates into 3.6 per cent of the total number of jobs in our marketplace. Only BC had a higher percentage rate.
Even at 19,000 unfilled spots, the labour market is tightening up. We’ve been seeing the number of job vacancies declining for some months now as population growth is gradually catching up to new employment generation.
It also could be that employers are creating fewer new jobs than they were at this time last year as higher interest rates put a damper on economic activity across the country.
The highest job vacancy rates can be found in the food and hospitality sectors as well as health care and social services.
