The manufacturing sector in this province is encountering a something of a slowdown, according to new numbers from StatsCanada.
Saskatchewan’s September results had us dealing with the second-largest pullback in the nation behind Quebec.
Even with the monthly decline, though, Saskatchewan posted a gain in the third quarter of the year, largely on the back of stronger food product sales.
Nonetheless, we do appear to be in a period of retrenchment with sales of petroleum products pulling back, a result of falling oil prices as well as declining volumes.
In the final analysis, Saskatchewan’s manufacturing revenues were roughly 15-percent behind last year’s pace. And the two major cities are taking a larger share of the pull back.
Regina saw manufacturing revenues fall 12-percent for the month and more than 23-percent for the year while Saskatoon’s retraction was steeper – 14-percent for the month and 33 points compared to a year earlier.
While manufacturing revenues fell in virtually every metropolitan region in Canada in the year, Regina and Saskatoon experienced the largest reductions.
