The month of June was one of those rare times when Saskatchewan employers were unable to keep up with population growth.
For most of this year, Saskatchewan has been one of the few places where job creation was closely mirroring the volume of newcomers arriving in the province in search of employment. But June saw the picture change slightly with population growth outpacing job formation.
The national picture saw job creation slowing, coming in at a virtual standstill in June. Saskatchewan posted some modest growth – about 400 new positions – while we added about 2,500 working age people to our population base.
The breakdown of the new numbers for the month saw a surge in part-time positions with 1,600 new slots while full-time job numbers declined by 1,200 leaving a net gain of 400 but fewer full-timers compared to May. The decline was most evident in Regina while Saskatoon saw job numbers increasing.
Nonetheless, the province is still 14,500 jobs ahead of where we were at this time a year ago.
