A question that’s been around for years is what is the difference between Regina and Saskatoon? One answer is manufacturing.
Figures for this sector issued by Statistics Canada for June 2022 show just how different the province’s two major cities are when it comes to this part of the economy. In simple terms, for every dollar Saskatoon-based manufacturers generate, firms in Regina do two dollars.
This may surprise some observers but the sheer magnitude of plants, such as Regina’s oil refinery or the steel mill, tilt the scales. June’s financial results are a reflection of that reality.
Revenues for Regina-based manufacturers were just under $1 billion for the month. Saskatoon saw a top line figure of roughly half that at $475 million.
Compared to a year ago, Saskatoon manufacturing revenues were up about 12 per cent and, in Regina, June was up nearly 60 per cent from a year earlier, the largest improvement in any major city in the country.
