The monthly report on job vacancies shows Saskatchewan replaced BC at the top of the provincial list with a vacancy rate of 4 per cent. In other words, almost 21,000 positions created or posted by employers have yet to be filled.
That is the highest percentage in the country and, at a time when most provinces are seeing their job vacancy rates decline, Saskatchewan’s is almost unchanged.
This metric is important because it shows there is still a lot of wind in the sails of employers – they are still expanding their payrolls. And, it comes at a time when immigration is pushing our population numbers higher.
With this volume of vacancies, new immigrants find it easier to secure employment in Saskatchewan than anywhere else in the nation.
That development was highlighted in a recent report by the economics team at a chartered bank who noted that Saskatchewan has one of the best track records for matching newcomers with employment opportunities.
