With one social media post, Donald Trump focused Canadians on all matters related to trade. The mere threat of a 25-percent tariff on all goods shipped into the US has Canada taking a crash course on global trade.
So here are a couple facts about Saskatchewan and trade. First of all, we are the country’s most trade-dependent province but the least reliant on the US.
With a small but productive population we produce far more than we can consume so we have to find a home for that product outside the country.
And, the US is our most significant customer. We ship them more of our goods than any other country.
But here’s where we are different than the rest of the Canada. All the other provinces also sell more to Americans than anyone else. Even more than Saskatchewan on a percentage basis.
In other words, the US is Saskatchewan’s biggest customer but our second, third and fourth customers are bigger making our order book more diversified with shipments of agricultural products and potash going in big volumes to virtually every continent.
