Apparently, Saskatchewan lost 3,400 full-time jobs in May. And they all became part-time positions.
At least that’s what the latest StatsCan job numbers are telling us. Their monthly survey suggests a few thousand people gave up on the workforce as well – either they retired, left the province or decided to stop looking for a job by dropping out.
It is hard to put much in the way of detail into these numbers as they usually are quite general, offering only a high-level perspective. But, given that they are the findings of a survey, they can be subject to big swings with just a few respondents who are outside the norm.
Nonetheless, these are the only data we have to work with and this latest report says Saskatchewan – like the rest of Canada – saw the number of people with a job decline from April to May. It is still ahead of where we were at this time a year ago but it does fit the narrative policymakers have been advancing about inflation — that we need to tighten credit to slow the economy down.
