Manufacturers in Saskatchewan are charting a very steady course these days.
This sector has been one of the strong suits for Saskatchewan, often posting large gains over the past few years and, in general, tracking on a growth track with few bumps or variations and providing consistent employment income.
The story is not changing much with each set of new data we get from StatsCan. May’s figures just came in, for example, and total revenue for Saskatchewan-based manufacturers rose about two per cent for the month. That is above the national average and stands up well — in the top two or three in the country.
And this time round it was Saskatoon’s manufacturing sector that was providing the most lift. Revenues rose almost 10 per cent for the month and nearly double that compared to the same time a year earlier.
This is especially noteworthy as Regina has a much larger manufacturing base with the steel mill and the refinery. But Saskatoon’s strong May saw total sales volumes of $600 million was not all that far behind Regina’s $790 million month.
