Saskatchewan has officially passed the 1.2 million population mark. Well, unofficially, anyway.
StatsCan supplements the every-five-years census with quarterly estimates of our population data. They can draw upon things such as health cards to track the movement of people within the country and the arrival of new residents from abroad.
Then, it issues a quarterly update. We have just received the three-quarter figures showing Saskatchewan’s population surpassed 1,200,000 in that period. Its estimate now has us at 1,205,119, a gain of just over 10,000 for the three months ending in September. It’s also a jump of more than 22,000 compared to a year earlier.
This represents the fastest growth rate we’ve seen in more than a century as Saskatchewan picks up momentum. For example, the gap between people moving from here other provinces and those coming here from other parts of the country is narrowing.
Ontario and BC are actually seeing that gap widen as the old adage — People Follow Opportunity — is proving accurate. Our economy is in growth mode and that is attracting new residents looking to ride that wave.
