Saskatchewan ranks in middle of provinces for active businesses

Saskatchewan ended 2023 with just over 43,000 businesses that generate an income for someone — 43,007 to be exact.

In addition, there are roughly twice that many that do not have any employees. These tend to be holding companies that have title to assets but do not have what we would traditionally consider as operations.

That ranks us as fifth in the country among the provinces when it comes to total active business counts. Only the Atlantic provinces have fewer and we are only a bit behind Manitoba which has slightly more population than us, even though their economy is smaller than ours.

When it is broken down by region, Saskatoon is the corporate hotspot in the province, boasting more than 11,000 operating entities at the end of 2023. That is an increase over a year earlier while Regina saw the total drop in 2023, ending the year with 8,700. Among the major cities, that puts Saskatoon in 16th position and Regina holds the 19th slot.
