As an exporting province with a relatively small consumer market, Saskatchewan generally relies on the supply chain to get our output to more populous markets.
As a result, the performance and fortunes of Saskatchewan businesses are often judged by our ability to export.
Much of this volume falls into the category of wholesale goods, a metric that is tracked monthly by StatsCan. And it usually involves big numbers, a key driver in Saskatchewan’s overall economic success.
The latest figures are from August and show a reversal of fortunes for us. We were seeing a softening of sales for this sector, but we now have a rebound in revenues recorded in late summer.
Total sales or revenues generated by firms in this segment topped $3.3 billion in the month or $100 million a day.
That represents an increase of more than 12 per cent for the month, the strongest rebound or growth rate among the provinces and much higher than the two per cent seen across the country but, even so, it lags last year’s showing by nearly 25 per cent.
