This is the kind of stuff that will elevate the heart rate of an economic developer.
Saskatchewan entrepreneurs are winning – they are opening more new businesses than old ones are closing. In short, our business community is expanding in lockstep with our population growth.
That finding is, perhaps, not surprising. As a community’s population rises, the number of services needed to meet the needs of those new residents should grow as well. But, some new numbers from StatsCan show that trends such as these are not necessarily universal.
For example, the number of new businesses opening in the two major cities has been steadily growing for most of the last year. But the provincial number is not as consistent as closures often outpace start-ups on a province-wide basis. What that tells us is that it is less likely that smaller centres will produce an entrepreneur to fill in when an existing business closes up or is sold.
Here’s a stat for the economic developers, Saskatchewan has almost exactly 25,000 active businesses on its roster.
