With income tax season rapidly approaching, StatsCan has just released data it gathered from last year’s returns and, it turns out that based on income, Saskatchewan is a population that is very stable in terms of demographics.
For example, the average age of tax filers in this province was 48, exactly the same age for the previous four years, debunking the notion that we’re an aging province. And the percentage of the population between 35 and 44 has been virtually unchanged for last year five years. It hit 18 per cent in 2022 after four years at 17 per cent.
The percentage of tax filers with an income between $44,000 and $60,000 has also remained virtually static at 18 per cent.
But here’s where we are seeing changes. The median employment income – this is the mid-point where half the number of people earning wages and salaries was above and the other half below the mark – has been steadily rising for the last five years, hitting a little over $41,000 in 2022.
The total number of tax filers rose by roughly 15,000 to 844,000 in the last five years.
