Travellers going farther, staying longer on vacations

For those in the travel industry, a confluence of events has led to a new pattern for their customers. They are going farther and staying longer.

When the pandemic hit, the travel industry was among the most challenged as flights were reduced and entertainment events were curtailed. But that also meant we became savers – putting away that spare cash originally destined for vacations with a plan to resume our tourist ways when things were back to normal.

And through that period many of us got older – a big cohort of the Baby Boomers reached retirement age with the itch to see the world when travel resumed.

Those two things may have contributed to the findings of a recent survey by TD Bank and Aeroplan. They found today’s traveller is going farther and staying longer, checking off bucket list destinations such as Thailand and Singapore or Australia.

Concerts and cultural events are also a big lure along with destinations seen in movies. They are seeing multi-generation groups embrace these more exotic or far-off destinations, often families tracing their own ethnic origins.
