Work friendships connected to employer loyalty

As Saskatchewan employers – especially those in Saskatoon, which currently sports the tightest labor market of any major city in Canada – scramble to find workers, almost any idea seems like a good one.

Now the talent hunt is complicated by concepts such as the Great Resignation, which now is being expanded into the Great Midlife Crisis as even long-tenured workers emerge from the pandemic with their sights set on a career change. So, that makes the hiring challenge even more daunting.

One idea that has now surfaced to combat the situation can be found at the website Strategy+ Business, which is owned by the consulting firm PwC.

It points to British research showing employees who have close friends at work are far less likely to look for new employment.

One of the casualties of remote working and pandemic lockdowns is personal contact with work friends and, it seems, we missed that.

Hybrid work situations going forward will not help as working from home gets in the way of having lunch with co-workers, water fountain conversations or after-work drinks.
