The beginning of 2025 also marks the beginning of the Year of Uranium in this province. In fact, it may be the start of the decade or century of uranium in Saskatchewan.
Although this is a story dating back decades, we are embarking on a crescendo in this narrative. From small beginnings in the Uranium City area following the second world war and the beginning of the cold war as Canada dreamed of being a nuclear-power supplier through its CANDU program, Saskatchewan has been at the heart of uranium production in this country.
But two major events in the recent past are rewriting our place in this industry.
First was Russia’s invasion of Ukraine which prompted many purchasers of uranium to look to Saskatchewan as an alternate supplier. Second was the COPS environmental conference decision to aggressively expand nuclear-powered electrical production around the globe to combat climate change.
Now, Saskatchewan – as the western world’s leading uranium producer – is positioned to see massive expansion of existing mines and a couple new projects nearing the construction stage.
